The 6 Best Sound Machines for a Blissful Night’s Sleep

82 / 100

Face it, we’re not getting enough sleep. Chronic sleeplessness harms your health and puts your morning commute safety at risk. What’s worse, this isn’t because of a lack of trying. Hence we listed 6 best sound machines for perfect sleep.

A good sound machine (also called a white-noise machine or a sleep machine) is just one device in a high-tech arsenal of devices that can help you get your desired number of z’s.

These are my favorite devices for getting the rest of a good night.

A Note on ‘White Noise’

Why We Don’t Call Them White-Noise Machines

You may wonder why we more often call these “sound machines” than “white-noise machines.” It’s because we’re nerds. Technically, most steady whirr from the background is not white noise at all. Most sound machines use noise instead of pink, or brown.

If you assume sound waves are roughly equivalent to light waves, then the different noise colors apply to various parts of the sound spectrum.

Pure white noise is a combination of all the frequencies that humans can hear so it can be a a little agitating (think about the static on your TV). Pink and brown noise are situated at the bottom of the spectrum and have been found to help people sleep a little deeper.

Here Are 6 Best Sound Machines for a Blissful Night’s Sleep

LectroFan Classic

See Now

Right now the Lectrofan Classic is the sound system .It is Just 4 inches across and 2 inches tall, it’s compact enough and unobtrusive to fit on top of the most crowded cabinet.

It’s incredibly sophisticated: you can choose from a selection of pink, brown, or white noise between fan sounds. You can crank it up to a whopping 85 decibels or keep it low enough that you can barely hear anything.

It also has a time timer of 60 minutes. you can use it without any problems for a year . When you buy for an infant, the American Academy of Pediatrics warns parents to keep sound machines away from where your baby sleeps to around 50 decibels and more than 200 centimeters (or 6.5 feet).

Simplest Sound Machine

Marpac Dohm Classic

See Now

Invented in 1962, Marpac’s Dohm (originally called the Sleep-Mate) is still one of the most popular sound machines you can purchase.

It’s a little bigger than the LectroFan at 4 inches tall and 5.5 inches wide but it’s much easier. Within the acoustic housing of the Dohm a revolving fan is set, and it has only two settings (the lower one is below 55 decibels).

If you normally sleep with a box fan but don’t want the dust bunnies all night blown into your face, that’s the pick for you.

Best Sound Machines for Babies and Kids

Hatch Rest

See Now

In one cute lamp, the Hatch Rest (formerly known as Hatch Baby Rest) incorporated all the needs of my kids: a sound machine, a night light, and a time-to-rise.

You can customize the colors of the Rest after downloading the app, adjust the volume and select from a sound library to soothe your child to sleep.

By touching the top you can turn it on or off, or set it to lock. You can configure the Rest to turn green when it’s time to get up, reminding your preschooler you won’t be a grumpy rage-monster anymore if they poke you into bed.

Hatch is launching an updated version this July which is Alexa-enabled, portable, and includes an audio display. The version of Rest Plus also contains those features and a digital clock, but it is a little more costly.

Best Sound Machines for Adults

Nest Mini

Do you already have a Nest Mini in your closet or any smart speaker? Congratulations, you already have a white-noise sound machine, and much more. A simple “Hey Google, help me relax” command will trigger 12 hours of ambient noise (if you don’t stop it). Also, you may say “play rain sounds,” fireplace sounds, country night sounds, or brook babbling sounds.

Google speakers also allow you to create a routine for bedtime (learn more about routines). These features work on any spokesperson for Google. You can also scan for white-noise playlists and play them on Spotify or other music services.

Alexa Also Works

Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen)

If you have an Echo Dot or any other Alexa speaker, you can pick sounds ranging from a whale!) (to a dishwasher or washing machine, using an Alexa skill called Ambient Noise.

There are also hundreds of other Skills Alexa sleep sounds available. Even if you ask for white noise or sleep sounds, Alexa can suggest a few.

And again, you can also check Spotify for white-noise playlists or other music services, such as Prime Music.

Try an App and a Bluetooth Speaker

The Google Home Mini is forgotten in your closet? You can also switch any of the best Bluetooth speakers into a sound machine with an app in your phone if you have a smartphone

. My favorite white noise software. From a dazzling variety of ambient noises, including “Tibetan Singing Bowl” or “Crowded House,” you can pick up your own sounds, make mixes or playlists, or set timers and alarms.

If you are using an app and Bluetooth speaker to make your kids sleep while traveling. just don’t forget to start wildly texting the minute you shut your door.

Avoid This One!

Marpac Go (Travel Sound)

See Now

The Marpac Go is the new compact, rechargeable sound tool available from Marpac. I used them for a couple of months. Recently, however, I heard it was recalled because the internal battery would leak, making it a danger to fire.

That’s a shame because I like having a dedicated, rechargeable sound machine to put the 2-year-old to sleep inside the car. Luckily, Marpac is making another machine which will not burn you while you’re sleeping.
