Best Baby Carrier For Travel

The Best Baby Carrier for Travel -What Baby Carrier is Best in 2020?

There are so many things to consider when determining what baby carrier is right for you and your baby. But if you want to find the Best Baby Carrier for Travel – there’s more to remember! Whether you’re an experienced baby wearer or not, it’s an excellent decision to wear a baby on vacation.

My husband and I have been wearing him since my son was born (nearly 6 years ago), both at home and around the world. We have tried a number of baby carriers between us over that time – from wrap baby carriers to backpack baby carriers for hiking trips.

I put this guide together to help you select the best baby carrier for your needs… If you’re a beginner to baby wearer, I’ve covered you with details on all the best baby carrier brands on the market, and what’s right for each one. If you’re already carrying a baby and you’re just looking for the best travel baby carrier, you can skip the comparison table and feedback ahead of you!

Stroller vs Best Baby Carrier for Travel

One that many parents are struggling with is the decision to use a baby carrier vs. stroller for travel. Of course, when you travel it’s sometimes easier to take a baby carrier and a stroller with you. But this isn’t always realistic. And if you don’t need extra luggage, who wants to haul around? Especially on top of all the other important baby items like a car seat and a travel crib!

I’m not going to go into all the benefits of baby carrying, but let’s look at some of the obvious and not-so-obvious advantages while travelling with a baby carrier.

Babywearing at the Airport/on the Plane

Keeping tabs on toddlers. Who wants to be run after the kids in a busy airport? Using a baby carrier is a great way to keep an eye on pre-schoolers and children when checking in and walking through the airport.

Allowing babies to sleep through security. If your flight is at a time when your baby normally sleeps, having them in a baby carrier will allow you to continue to sleep while you are going through the check-in and security screening process. You will have to remove the baby carrier at some airports to go through security but not always. It’s still a better option than taking them from their stroller – which is sure to wake up most children!

Having hands free for luggage. Have you ever tried to push at the same time a loaded cart and a stroller? Trust me, you’re going to want to miss this one. Especially if you fly without the aid of another adult.

It’s just a godsend on the plane. It can be difficult to fly with young babies. Once we went with him on our first major overseas trip, our son did not fall asleep on his own. Using the baby carrier made it easier to rock him to sleep, either standing in the aisle or just walking up and down – without getting my arms numb from the effort! It was much easier to transfer him to the bassinet once he was sleeping, or sit down and let him snooze on my front while using the baby carrier.

It’s light and easy to transport. It goes without saying that it’s easier to transport a baby carrier than a stroller, and if you wear it, it won’t even count as part of your luggage allowance!

Babywearing at your destination

Strollers can’t cope with cobbled lanes.  I have taken our shiny new Bugaboo stroller with us the first time we travelled to Europe with our son – and then realized it was more of a hassle than anything else! The haphazard nature of European streets contributes to their appeal, but they are not ideal for strollers with cobbled lanes, narrow paths raised curbs and rough roads.

Save space on public transport. If you’ve ever tried to get with a stroller on a packed subway/metro train, you probably won’t want to repeat the experience!

Sightsee with ease. you can take your walker up the Eiffel Tower in Paris or to the Museum of Natural History in New York, but you’re going to fight the crowds and you’re going to find that without you you can get better! Toddlers aren’t going to be happy not to see all the crowds or rails, and you’re going to end up hoisting them up to get a better look anyway.

Needless to say, there have been numerous sights that we have visited all over Europe that would certainly have been difficult with a stroller – and there is often no safe place to store either.

Make shopping simple. Not all shopping aisles are made equal and in some shops, you may be in trouble trying to navigate a voluminous stroller.

Best Baby Carriers for Travel

List

How to Choose the Best Baby Carrier for Travel

selecting the best travel baby carrier is not much different from selecting a home baby carrier. Some things to consider include who’s going to wear the baby (or kid), how often it’s going to be used, whether you want to hold it back or front, and perhaps whether looks or practicality is more important to you!

Travel specific requirements may include:

  • The environment you’re flying to
  •  Whether you’re going to need a carrier that’s easy to put on and off when you get in and out of a vehicle
  •  Comfort for a full day of transportation Whether your older child can comfortably get in and out …
  • Easily washable
  • A carrier that can be worn by both parents to avoid packing two

But apart from everything else, when choosing the best baby carrier for air travel, safety and comfort should be key to your decision making.

Babywearing Safely

The safety of children is paramount. When you entrust a piece of fabric to support your child’s weight, making sure that the baby carrier is up to the job is important. Here are a few things that you should be aware of to safely carry your infant.

  • Please follow the carrier’s weight limits. These are the weight limits to which they were checked and proved safe.
  • Make sure the airways of your baby are clear and your baby in the baby wrap is well protected.
  • Don’t buy cheap baby carrier knock-offs. It could compromise items like stitching, buckles, and fabric quality – with potentially harmful consequences.

Comfort for Baby

It’s essential to make sure you get the right match for your kids. Not just for their convenience, but also for their protection. This is why it is important to seek guidance from expert baby wearers on how to properly use it when using a wrap or sling.

Another key aspect – especially for very young children – is maintaining the proper positioning of the knee/hip.It prevents the emergence of conditions such as hip dysplasia from abuse of your cover. Again, this is another explanation of why SSCs are common because it is much harder to get it wrong!

Comfort for Babywearer

The more relaxed you’re carrying your boy, the more often you’re going to do it! Most baby carriers will allow you to hold your child comfortably up to a heavy pre-school student. And, when it comes to convenience, think of longevity too. For newborn babies, the best baby carrier may not be the best baby carrier for infants.

Choosing the best baby carrier for your personal needs is a major step in your child care journey.

Types of Baby Carriers

It can be a minefield choosing the right one with so many types of baby carriers on the market. They all have good stuff, and stuff they’re not so good at.No one size fits all babywearing approach! But what’s certain is that you will find life with a baby so much easier as soon as you find the best baby carrier for you.

BABY WRAP

For centuries, there have been the first baby sling, baby wraps around. It is the baby carrier’s most basic form. That makes it one of the most flexible, but one of the most difficult to learn!

Essentially just a long piece of cloth, you can do with a baby cover in several carriages.

Stretchy baby wraps are one of the best newborn baby carriers, but they are not suitable for older babies weighing more and needing more support.

Woven wraps can be used up to the end of your baby’s days. You should accommodate a preschooler with a good quality woven blanket!

MEI TAI

A-Mei Tai is a mixture of a cover and an SSC (below). It includes a large back panel and four long links winding around your and your baby’s body. If you’re not comfortable in wrapping, they’re a good compromise but want a little more fit versatility than the SSC would allow.

Mei Tais are good for young children, and they’re all right to breastfeed in, but not the easiest to get the hang of (see below my choice of the best breastfeeding baby carrier).

RING SLING

If you love the look of baby wraps, ring slings are ideal, but want something much faster and easier to throw on. I used to keep my car and put it in the supermarket or gas station for quick dashes. To nosey kids, they are fine, and great to hip carries.

They are also one of the most flexible carriers that will see you right through to pre-schoolers from the newborn stage!

The only downside to ring slings is one arm carrying the weight load. So they’re not great for long carriages.

SOFT STRUCTURED CARRIER (SSC)

The most common baby carrier is the soft-structured carrier. These are easy to use, these can be extremely comfortable, and some come in lightweight, breathable fabrics that make them one of the best baby carriers for summer travel.

On your front or back, many soft structured baby carriers can be worn, and some can even be worn on your hip. They are often referred to as the best baby carrier for Dads!

STRUCTURED BACKPACK BABY CARRIER FOR HIKING

Baby carrier backpack is a more powerful carrier for children. They have a structured setting that allows your child to sit on your back in more than one chair position. They’re not ideal for babies, but they can be a good option for older kids, particularly if you’re hiking a lot!

Some have built-in rain covers and bigger pockets, making them ideal for long day outdoor hikes.

With fathers, they are also a very popular option.

Choosing the Best Baby Carrier for Your Needs

Since you know the different types of baby carriers and the advantages and disadvantages of each, it’s time to look at which baby carrier is right for your unique travel needs.

BEST BABY CARRIER FOR NEWBORN

Never is a baby carrier more necessary than a newborn baby. Often referred to as the newborn babies of the ‘ 4th trimester ‘ take comfort in being at all times close to mum or dad. But if you have other children or other commitments, with a sleeping newborn on your lap, it is not always possible to spend the whole day on the couch! Baby carriers enable new moms to continue their day while meeting your newborn’s needs.

It is important to select the best baby carrier for newborn babies. More importantly, your baby’s body is properly supported, the baby wrap is the right size to bear your baby securely, and it’s convenient enough to wear at the same time for many hours.

Our pick of the best baby carriers for a newborn are:

BEST BABY CARRIER FOR HIKING

If you plan to hit the tracks with your little one, finding the right baby hiking carrier is important. There’s nothing worse than an awkward fit, or a carrier when you’re in the middle of a long hike that’s simply not up to speed.

When you buy a baby back carrier for hiking, being able to transfer the carrier between parents is another important consideration.

Our pick of the best baby carriers for hiking are:

BEST BABY WRAP CARRIER

Not all wraps are equal to each other. Stretchy wraps are great for young babies, but they need more support for older babies. Woven wraps are great for all ages and deliver infinite flexibility, but at the beginning take a little to get used to.

If you’re looking for the best wrap baby carrier, consider how long you’re planning on babywearing, what styles of carriages you’re likely to do, and how much you’re willing to spend – as wraps vary from very inexpensive to eye-wateringly costly!

Here’s our pick of the best baby carrier wraps:

BEST BABY TODDLER CARRIER FOR TRAVEL

With so many choices on the market, choosing the best kids carrier for travel is now more difficult than ever! You are no longer confined to one or two choices, as more and more brands are releasing versions of their most popular baby carriers.

Things to consider when buying a travelling baby carrier include seat height and width for safety, ease of putting your heavy baby into it, and how safe it is for babies to get out. Because we all know how much busy children want to enter and leave their carriers, right?!

Our choice of the best toddler carrier for travel is:

BEST BABY CARRIER FOR DADS

When it comes to babywearing, men and women have different needs. So you need to look beyond what works for you if you want to find the best baby carrier for men to wear. Things like where the weight is balanced, the shape of the body (big bellies can make front carriers uncomfortable!), and extendable straps can make all the difference.

There were some carriers that my husband enjoyed in our babywearing journey, and others that he considered extremely uncomfortable – or at worst, unwearable.

Here’s our choice of the best baby carrier for dads:

BEST BABY BACKPACK CARRIER

It can be much more convenient to hold your baby on your back than to bear their weight on your front and encourage you to be more flexible. Once your baby is on your back, stuff like vacuuming, shopping, and anything else that needs bending over, will be a lot more comfortable.

But when it comes to supportive back carriers, not all carriers are created equal.

Here’s our pick of the best baby carrier backpacks:

BEST BABY SLING CARRIER

A baby sling will be your best friend when it’s time to cook dinner for a quick trip to the shops or to console fussy babies. Really easy to put on (once you get the hang of it) and wearing the perfect hip baby carrier, a sling helps you to get on with what you’re doing when taking care of your baby or toddler.

It’s a relatively easy task to find the best baby carrier sling. Remove slings that do not permit modification, as they are rarely comfortable or secure, and stick to durable materials such as thick woven wrap conversions and solid metal rings.

Our pick of the best sling baby carrier is:

BEST BABY CARRIER FOR BREASTFEEDING

It is important to have the option to breastfeed your baby in a carrier whether you are breastfeeding, or you plan to do so. Any time he or she is hungry, you don’t want to get your baby out – particularly with very young babies who are often hungry!

Once I forgot to feed my son just before the dogs walked. He got hungry halfway through our walk and I could feed him on the go – hands-free and discreet!

Our choice of the best baby carrier for breastfeeding is:

BEST BABY CARRIER FOR TRAVEL IN SUMMER

You and your baby can be taxed on babywearing in extreme heat With young infants, you have to be careful about them overheating, and older kids will probably be uncomfortable being handling whenever they’re all sweaty and hot.

. Luckily, some baby carriers are better at handling the hot weather, and carriers are also cottoning on the need for more ventilation!

Here’s our choice of the best summer baby carrier:

BEST BABY CARRIER FOR TWINS

If you’ve been blessed with twins, you might not know it’s a very viable option for you too! Although some brands make a baby carrier for twins, from what I’ve seen, none of them is incredibly well designed. Instead, you’re better off being a carrier from the most popular baby carriers and making it work twice!

It is possible to wear a long woven wrap (size 6 or 7) to carry one baby on the front and one on the back. Or you can tie it on each hip to wear one baby. Alternatively, use two SSCs and use one on the back and one on the front – allowing maximum flexibility and giving someone else the chance to offload one when the opportunity arises!

Here’s our suggestion of the best twin baby carrier:

BEST FRONT FACING BABY CARRIER

I’ve never been a huge fan of baby carriers facing the front. My son was a baby that was easily over-stimulated, so he’d never worked for him. In addition, concerns were raised about the earlier “crotch dangling” designs of front-facing baby carriers and whether they contributed to poor hip health.

But I can see how they could have their place with older, more curious babies who are not content to look out from their parent’s chest’s protection to the world. And in recent times, designs have developed dramatically to compensate for the hip placement described above. If you have a curious kid on your hands and prefer a front carrier to a hip carrier or backpack, here are the best front-facing baby carrier designs:

BEST BABY CARRIER FOR PLUS SIZE MOM OR DAD

Parents of a plus-size need not worry about finding a suitable baby carrier. There are many baby carriers on the market that allow babywear comfortably – and in a variety of positions – in addition to sized moms and dads.

Our choice of the best baby carrier for plus size parents is:

BOBA BABY WRAP

See Now

When you have a baby who just needs to be stuck to you 24/7, a stretchy wrap is an absolute godsend. And for newborns, the best baby wrap carrier is the Boba Baby Wrap It is breathable and flexible made from 95% cotton/5% spandex, so you won’t have trouble wearing it for hours!

Many parents (including myself) love the art of wrapping and the flexibility that allows you to carry your baby. And a stretchy wrap is often a stepping stone to a woven wrap that is more appropriate for older babies and infants.

The Boba wrap is also a perfect baby carrier for premature babies, so you would be covered if your little bundle of joy arrived early!

The only downside to the Boba Wrap is that getting the wrapping technique right can take a little practice. At first, the long lengths of the cloth may seem quite daunting. But once you’ve got the hang of it, as your first baby wrap, you won’t regret buying the Boba! Other stretchy wraps, like the Baby K’ Tan, have less fabric, but you have to choose a size that makes it hard for two parents to share a carrier.

Boba Wrap for Travelling

The Boba Wrap is one of the best travel baby carriers because it only weighs 1.76 lbs and can roll up small in your suitcase! Other travel benefits include: Both parents can easily use it, so there is no need to pack two carriers.

  • Washable machine and quickly dries.
  • For hot climates, breathable cotton is good.
  • Can breastfeed on-the-go your newborn (and discreetly if you want to).

HIP BABY RING SLING

See Now

Although some people swear for younger babies by ring slings, I really enjoyed using one once my baby was a little older. The Hip Baby Ring Sling is one of the best budget baby carriers, a way to get a high-quality carrier at a low price.

The Hip Baby Ring Sling is a great looking baby carrier, handwoven in 100% cotton and coloured with eco-friendly dies. And adding solid aluminium sling rings means it is strong and safe for your baby.

The Hip Baby Ring Sling’s adjustable size makes it perfect for mums, dads and plus-size wearers alike – it’s the most portable baby carrier!

The Hip Baby carrier is best suited for brief sightseeing stints. Since all the weight of your baby is held on one shoulder, if worn for long periods of time, it can become uncomfortable.

Hip Baby for Travelling

Due to its super easy setup, a good-quality ring sling is perfect for travelling. Other travel advantages include: lightweight fabric makes wearing and packaging easy.

  • Washable from the machine.
  • Toddlers will easily get in and out.
  • Older babies and babies on the hip can see more.
  • A great place to nurse.

If you’ve decided that a Mei Tai is the best baby carrier for you, then a great choice is the Infantino Sash Wrap. This easy-to-use carrier, widely regarded as one of the best cheap baby carriers on the market, is perfect for those who want a little more structure but still love the flexibility offered by wrap carriers.

The Infantino is lightly padded and buckle-free, making it extremely comfortable for all sizes of baby wearers. And while for newborns I wouldn’t recommend it, the sash ties mean that it can grow with your child.

Also, the Infantino allows you to carry your child on your hip or back, which can be much more comfortable as your baby becomes heavier.

Infantino for Travelling

See Now

Although the Mei Tai is not my favourite baby carrier, with its padded straps and semi-structured style, this Infantino version makes it a great baby carrier for travelling. Other travel advantages include:

  • it’s the best international travel carrier at just 1.6 lbs.
  • Easy transfer between parents – there are no adjustments to make.
  • Washable from the machine.

Its simple, lightweight design makes it a breeze to wear, and without having to buy an insert, your carrier will enable you to wear your baby right from birth to toddler years.

Ranked as the best baby carrier for mom/dads/carers plus size, the Boba 4 G has one of the largest waist belt capacities – ranging from 25-58 inches.

We especially love children’s foot straps because they give your kid some stability (and they’re less likely to kick you if their feet are firmly anchored to something!). I do love this carrier’s high back that’s great for big children like mine!

The Boba 4 G is a baby carrier ‘ workhorse ‘ – it’s strong, reliable and well-rounded – at home and abroad! Some travel advantages include: wearers can easily be changed.

See Now

Didymos has a reputation for making excellent quality wraps that work well and look fabulous! The best baby carrier wrap for older babies! My first woven wrap was a Didymos, and my love of wrapping was cemented.
