One of the most important decisions that we take for our children as parents is the food we choose for them. Food preferences, tastes and habits begin early in life and we can teach our children to enjoy healthy options by introducing them with the freshest, most delicious options. Organic baby food is a perfect choice to start off on the right foot with your little one. Hence we list updated list of best organic baby foods.
Research has shown that food choices made by a mother while she is pregnant have an effect on the food preferences of her baby later in life.
How can we ensure that our children have good food options and really enjoy fruit and vegetables with a society that tells us that kids, toddlers and teenagers dislike to eat healthy?
The goal is to introduce healthy options early on to show them fruits and veggies are not only decent but also delicious.
Think about the difference in taste between canned, jarred or even frozen vegetables and the real thing that’s fresh from the aisle or garden produce, and it’s easy to understand why forms that are primarily fed with pre-packaged foods hate vegetables! Neither would I like peas, if I knew them from a can only as brown mushrooms.
Why Choose Organic?
If you are reading this article you probably already know that organically grown products are better for the environment, our health and especially better for the health of our children.
Organic farmers do not use toxic chemical pesticides or herbicides but use crop rotation and natural fertilizers such as composted manure instead of synthetic and petroleum based fertilizers to add nutrients to the soil.
Conventional farming robs the soil of nutrients, kills the necessary bacteria and microbes for healthy soil and relies on chemical additives to feed the plants.
Many organic farmers find themselves “soil farmers,” as they concentrate on maintaining healthy soil with good levels of beneficial bacteria, microbes, fungi and all the nutrients that their crops need.
Babies and children are particularly vulnerable to the toxic chemicals that are used in conventional farming. Even low levels of these toxins can have far-reaching consequences for long-term health of babies and children.
Pesticides and herbicides that are sprayed on fields to kill bugs and weeds are the worst offenders. Round Up or glyphosate, a carcinogenic and possible endocrine disrupting chemical used to kill weeds, is the most well-known.
GMO crops such as soy and corn, which have been genetically modified to be “Round up Resistant,” are particularly common so that farmers can douse a field to kill weeds without destroying their crops.
Unfortunately, a complete lack of exposure to these chemicals is almost unlikely in our modern world. They are fat-soluble, so fat stores are contained in our bodies, and even in breast milk.
Luckily, eating organic foods nurtures our bodies ‘ natural detoxification processes for us and for our children and helps to flush out the toxins contained in our fat cells and in our blood.
The Dirty Dozen
No one is perfect, and even if we select organic much of the time, it is almost impossible to avoid 100 percent of the time consuming conventionally grown produce.
The Environmental Working Group has compiled a list of the 12 crops with the highest levels of pesticide residues in laboratory tests.
These are the ones you should always be buying organic. During the growing process, these fruits and vegetables are either sprinkled with more chemicals, or they consume and maintain more than normal. For 2017 the list includes:
- Sweet Bell Peppers
- Hot Peppers
Baby Food Stages
You will see Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3″ written on the package while shopping for the baby food. What do you mean by that? Baby food is divided into stages based on dietary requirements for certain age groups of children.
Stage 1 foods are 4-6 months old for children. Stage 1 consists of purees made from single ingredients. Such purees are expected to be very smooth, without lumps or complex textures.
These do not contain meat, eggs or dairy – only fruits, vegetables, or single cereals such as oats. The easiest way to feed your baby single ingredients at a time is to keep an eye out for allergies or sensitivities to the food.
Wait a few days in this stage before introducing new foods. When you know your baby isn’t prone to specific foods, you can start mixing it with mixtures.
Keep in mind that breast milk should still be the principal source of nutrition for your baby during Stage 1. Stage 1 is about introducing new flavors and textures into your bay, and giving them the opportunity to eat comfortably using their mouth.
Don’t be surprised if during this time they spit out most of what you feed them – learning to spit out food is an important milestone on the road to chewing and swallowing!
Stage 2 foods are intended for babies 6-8 months old. Stage 2 foods are mixtures of fruit, vegetables, and grains. These contain approximately two to four ingredients and may be strained rather than pureed.
This gives a bit more texture to the Stage 2 foods as your baby starts to learn how to chew and swallow. Your baby is likely to start eating more than they spit out during this period, so stage 2 foods always come in containers larger than stage 1.
Stage 3 feeds are 8-10 months old and up for infants. These are more complex blends with plenty of flavor in them and new foods. These may include dairy, meat or poultry, but vegetarian options are also available, as many parents choose not to add animal products until after one year or later.
Stage 3 foods will be mashed rather than strained and pureed, and may contain small chunks of soft foods. This will give your baby the opportunity to really learn how to chew, as well as start to use their own fork and spoon while eating.
The baby will start having the flexibility and the teeth after stage 3 to be able to try chunkier foods. Make sure that their food is always sliced into tiny pieces, as even chunks as big as a peanut can be a threat to choke. You will find baby food in this article, for all three stages and beyond.
Each brand is special in their vision and the way they process their food, and I’m sure you’ll find one in the list below that perfectly suits your needs.

2. White Leaf Provisions: Biodynamic Baby Food
White Leaf Provisions is a modern baby food company that takes one step further on “Organic.” Not only do biodynamic farming avoid GMOs, toxic chemical fertilizers and pesticides, they also use principles in their farming that add vitality to the soil rather than depleting it.
Typical farms, even organic ones, become dependent on adding nutrients to the soil each year because they plant the same crops over and over again, depleting vital nutrients in the soil itself.
Biodynamic farms view the entire farm as a living organism, and use practices such as crop rotation, moon-phase planting in a cycle, and specially prepared herbal and mineral soil supplements to enliven the soil in which the crops are grown. These practices help to secure a healthy, sustainable farm for generations to come.
White Leaf Provisions Their purees in pouches had nutritious mixtures of fruits and vegetables, smooth and even texture, and unique flavors.
When they experiment with different foods, baby palettes are constantly growing and changing and it is necessary not only to feed them with sweet tastes but also to get them used to savory and even bitter tastes.
This simple practice will help them develop a taste for healthy lifestyle foods – but is often forgotten as the majority of baby and infant foods are sweet to satisfy the tastes of the child. I loved their apple sauces too, especially the apple / pear blend.
White Leaf founders a couple of questions to learn more about what separates their business from the rest, and to learn about their background and vision.
What is the story behind the founding of your company?
White Leaf Regulations started in two separate countries: Ireland and the United States. Keith was born and raised in a small rural village in south-eastern Ireland. Growing up in a tight-knit farming community Keith developed a passion for simple, responsibly farmed foods.
He went on to become a classically French-trained chef, where he worked all over Europe and around the world. Meghan had also spent many years with her education in Europe where she developed a respect for EU food standards and a general approach to food and nutrition in Europe.
As a successful food entrepreneur’s daughter grew up, Meghan was always curious about healthy foods, and felt the food story went much deeper than a brand name.
Meghan and Keith met in the US more than ten years ago, giving birth to their son in 2013. Keith became a home dad who had just started exploring the baby and child food aisles in the U.S. with a European mentality about feeding and maintaining the eating habits of his children.
The choices were strong with a lot of organic and GMO-free but what surprised me most is the lack of transparency behind the fruits and vegetables with regard to the farming practices.
Organic certification informs that some chemicals have not been used in the farming process and the GMO-free certification shows us that the product was being tested for possible contamination of GMO.
Having been raised in the EU, Keith was aware of the Demeter program, which also aimed to grow organic products with zero tolerance for GMOs, but also the certification umbrellas, which included creating safe, nutrient-rich soils, encouraging biodiversity and pollinators, replacing fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides with compost and herbal sprays, respecting the surrounding wetlands, waterways and the concept of regenerating the farm beyond sustainable agriculture.
Keith and Meghan did not see why the aisles that sell snack options for the most vulnerable pallets and delicate tastebuds did not offer that degree of purity.
What is the biggest hole in the baby food market you are trying to fill?
Keith and Meghan have been well aware of organic and GMO-free certifications and there are also many products on the market that are being grown sustainably.
What they found most surprising was the lack of information about the cultivation methods used to grow these crops. We saw no brands going beyond all of the above, but also sourcing fruits and vegetables that were grown with the planet’s health which our children will inherit in mind.
Modern agriculture is one of the world’s biggest polluters and Meghan and Keith thought that sustainable agriculture wasn’t enough to solve the most pressing issues of today.
Regenerative farming practices go beyond organic and sustainable farming to help heal the farm sequester carbon from the environment, create nutrient-rich soil in which to grow nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables all with a common belief that the farm can be self-reliant without the need for external influences. Our farmers use the biodynamic farming practices as the gold standard in organic and regenerative farming.
The Demeter certification umbrellas everything we needed to see in a product we were going to feed our kids. Established nearly 100 years ago in Europe, Demeter is known in over 60 countries, and is the world’s oldest ecological certification.
Only now does science begin to unlock the potential of healthy soil, and the impact it can have on our planet’s environment and safety.
Can you tell me about where you source your ingredients and what makes them different than other brands?
We source the bulk of our Demeter-certified fruit and vegetables from farms that adopt biodynamic methods of farming. All other farms are certified organic and have as a reference zero tolerance to GMO’s.
The farmers depend beyond these requirements on the use of farming practices that are not mandatory for organic farming. These practices involve swapping for natural compost chemical fertilizers.
Replacing pesticides and herbicides with natural sprays, leaving 10% of all agricultural land to promote biodiversity. Conduct more crop rotation and cultivate cover crops in order to add nutrients back to the soil. Working with nature’s rhythms and creating respect for every living thing on the farm.
All biodynamic farmers have the goal of healing the farm and building nutrient rich soil. Healthy topsoil is decreasing globally because of inappropriate farming practices, excessive use of toxic chemicals and poor management.
The healthy, nutrient soil on a biodynamic farm to grow nutrient-rich organic fruits and vegetables but also enables the farmland to become a tool for reversing climate change by taking carbon out of the atmosphere and bringing it back into the soil where it is an essential component of a healthy soil.
What is your biggest piece of advice for new parents who want to do the best for their kids in terms of nutrition?
The best thing you can do is lead by example and introduce yourself a healthy diet, often exposing your child to the sight, smells and tastes of a variety of foods.
Provide plenty of foods for vegetables, fruits, healthy fats and whole grains. Our most important piece of advice is to try to choose several different options for your child and to continue to expose them to new tastes, textures and experiences.
Parents tend to find flavors that appeal to their tastebuds and forget that the tastebuds of their child are in training mode that sets the tone for the rest of their lives for their eating habits.
Items Include Purees in the following flavors: Mango / Carrot / Banana / Pear, Pear / Banana / Kiwi, Carrot / Sweet Potato / Pea, Apple / Sweet Potato / Beet.
Apple Sauces: Applesauce with Ceylon Cinnamon, Apple and Pear Mix

5. Once Upon A Farm: High Pressure Pasteurized (HPP) Puree Pouches
Pre-packaged baby food and snacks are super convenient and perfect for snacks on the go, but one of the biggest drawbacks of purchasing pre-packaged food is that the high heat pasteurization process kills a high percentage of nutrients in the food, including vitamins, minerals, probiotic bacteria, digestive enzymes and more.
Choosing organic diminishes the harm as organic foods have a higher overall vitamin and mineral value but still losing a decent amount of nutrients through pasteurization.
Fresh food is best for digestion and overall health, which is why many parents choose to make baby food on their own.
Once Upon A Farm is a modern organic baby food company using an innovative new technique to reduce the pasteurization damage done. Their baby food pouches are processed using Pascalization with High Pressure, or HPP. Standard baby foods are processed in such a way that they do not expire for years, giving them a dull color and overly sweet or bland flavour.
Once Upon A Farm purees use the freshest organic USA grown produce (check out their site for a farm map) and are found in your grocery store’s refrigerated section. Their 60-day shelf-life (instead of 2 years) tells you the materials are super fresh and minimally processed to maintain quality, taste and texture.
Once Upon A Farm mixes are known to be Stage 2 or Stage 3 baby foods. Each puree contains a creamy blend of fruits, vegetables and healthy fats for balanced nutrition, optimal nutrient absorption and healthy brain growth.

We describe their mission as providing children with a passion for nutritious, whole organic foods early on so that they will continue to enjoy healthy options later in life.
Starting with baby purees, Sprout products include Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3. Single ingredients like Sweet Potato or Prunes are Stage 1 pouches. 8. Ella’s Kitchen: Sweet And Simple Purees and Snacks
Ella’s Kitchen is a multinational UK based company that sells organic baby and newborn foods across the United States, Canada and Europe.
The story behind Ella’s Kitchen is one that you hear a lot about in this business. The company was founded when Paul, Ella’s dad, found it difficult to provide his daughter with the nutritious and delicious baby foods available.
He started Ella’s Kitchen to provide her daughter and all other kids around the globe with a better option. His goal was to help children “discover how enjoyable, tasty and cool healthy food can be.”
Ella’s Kitchen approaches organic baby food from the viewpoint of an infant, with its tastes and preferences in mind. Their yummy recipes, the names of their products and their fun, bold and colorful packaging make this clear.
Ella’s items are divided into four groups – Ella’s 1 for babies 4 months up (Stage 1), Ella’s 2 for babies 6 months up (Stage 2 and 3), 1 + Years and Big Children. Ella’s 1 includes single fruit and veggie purees such as “mangoes mangoes mangoes” or “pears pears pears.”

9. NurturMe: Quality Organics From Four Months to Four Years
NurturMe is a truly unique baby food brand which offers an innovative solution to high-heat pasteurization problems. As I mentioned earlier, the majority of shelf-stable baby food products use high heat pasteurization.
This approach eliminates a significant amount of the nutritional value found in organic fruit and veggies, which is why so many parents choose to prepare their own organic baby food rather than buy pre-packaged food.
One solution is HPP or high-pressure pasteurizing, but the end product must be refrigerated so you lose a lot of comfort. For a long day out, you can not just throw HPP processed foods into your diaper bag.
It is here that NurturMe comes in. Instead of wet packaged and pasteurized their baby food purees are freezed dry. Freeze dried food is flash-dehydrated with no heat or strain, thereby completely preserving the nutrients and even the bright vibrant colors of the foods.
Freeze dried food has as much intact nutritional value as frozen food does, but with the added benefit of being room temperature shelf-stable.
The organic baby food packs from NurturMe come in a variety of flavours, including berries, vegetables and grains. Such blends are considered to feed Stage 2 because they contain two to four ingredients. Preparation is super simple, just swirl and add a bit of water.
You can then feed your baby with a bowl and spoon, or you can use one of NurturMe’s reusable snack pouches. Depending on your baby’s age and preference you can add more or less water-more water for a smoother consistency, less water for more texture.
The packets can also be used as as a flavoring in homemade bay and baby food recipes, or as a nutritious boost to condiments and sauces.
Although NurturMe started as a line of fully frozen dried baby foods, in recent years they have expanded into other areas. They deliver a protein-packed Baby Cereal with Quinoa as an alternative to rice or oats. The cereal comes in four flavors-Plain, Banana, Apple, and Sweet Potato Raisin.
Older babies and infants enjoy their bite-sized freeze-dried fruit + Yum-A-Roo veggie snacks, as well as their Quinoa Squares with crispy puffed grains. NurturMe also has Power Blends for Pouchie lovers: fruit, vegetable, and ancient grain blend puree pouches.
Items Included: Freeze Dried Infant Food, Quinoa Baby Cereal, Freeze Dried Fruit / Veggie Snacks, Quinoa Squares, Ancient Grain Puree Pouches
10. Beech Nut: Organic, Plastic Free Purees
Beech Nut baby food is one of the only brands of pre-packaged organic baby foods currently offering food in glass jars. In recent years, Jarred baby food has become less popular since the “pouch” invention, since glass is heavy and breakable.
But if you’re concerned about chemicals like BPA, phthalates, and other endocrine disruptors that leach into your baby’s milk, you might not be so excited about plastic pouches!
Some BPA-free plastics are known to contain hormone-disrupting chemicals such as BPS, which can sometimes be some harmful than BPA, even if they don’t have the same media coverage.
For many parents the bottom line is that these substances are still being tested to ascertain their safety or lack of it, and babies are much more vulnerable to their effects than adults.
Most parents are not prepared to take that chance, and prefer glass to plastic. Beech Nut, however, hasn’t completely shunned the pouch craze.
You have the option to buy their delicious organic purees in either glass jars or snacks for snacking on the go. Beech Nut is a small New York based company that specializes in authentic food made from whole ingredients.
We also have an environmental responsibility, and are Leed certified from the U.S Green Council to Build. It means that all Beech nut foods are processed in an energy-efficient environment, where they take steps to reduce their impact in water usage, waste disposal, and recycling.
You can read about their low-heat cooking process on their website which retains more freshness and nutritional value than high-heat cooking.
Beech Nut purees are blended cold and then cooked with indirect heat, so the food’s flavor and nutrients are not diluted. They also seal their jars using a special vacuum process, removing the need for added preservatives.
Beech Nut uses ingredients of the highest quality, sourcing locally where possible, and it’s nice that they put as much thought into their production as they do the sourcing.
Price: Stage 1 and Stage 2 purées in Glass Jars or Pouches
11. Pure Spoon: Refrigerated HPP Baby Food Purees
Last but not least, this is one of my personal favorite baby food companies here. Pure Spoon Organics is another brand that was born in the baby food aisle out of the parents ‘ disappointment with their child’s choices.
Pure Spoon’s founder’s words: “Nothing on the shelf seemed like anything I’d want, so why feed it to my daughter? It wasn’t fresh food and it certainly didn’t look new, smell, or taste.
Many of the choices had a one year or more shelf-life! More importantly, quality, taste and texture of fresh food products were missing in the baby food.”
Pure Spoon uses HPP or high-pressure pasteurization, and is cooled with shelf life shorter than baby foods jarred or “pouched.” That is the secret to their food’s freshness and vitality, which looks delicious enough for any adult to want to cook!
HPP manufacturing is super innovative and the first company to apply this new technology to baby food was Pure Spoon. The refrigerated lane, where fresh food belongs, includes pure Spoon items!
The offerings of Pure Spoon are simple – Stage 1 and Stage 2 purees, made from fresh organic fruits and veggies. You can buy them in bulk packs to store in your fridge and you’ll still have a wide range of tasty recipes for your little one to eat.
Pure Spoon products are perfect for parents who want the freshest and healthiest options to feed their children but don’t always have time to prepare baby food from scratch.
Products Included: Stage 1 and Stage 2 purees and refrigerated for HPP processed for full freshness.
